Networks must embrace mobile VoIP to survive
Posted by Steven Gaskill

Mobile communications firms could eventually be forced out of the voice market if they fail to adopt VoIP, according to business and technology analysis provider Ovum.

Steven Hartley, principal analyst with the group, said that there is "clearly a risk" of mobile network operators being "cut out" of the voice services sector.

However, he added that the issue poses no "immediate threat" to large networks, though it could have a noticeable impact on their revenues.

"More immediate is regulatory intervention to force open the networks to VoIP providers," he went on to say, citing the net neutrality debate in the US as one example of how such intervention might effect the industry.

The expert concluded by arguing that mobile network operators "still have an important role to play" because of the scale and quality of service they are able to offer.

Last week, In-Stat announced that the coming few years are expected to be transformational for mobile VoIP, as mobile operators respond to forecasts of almost 140 million people using the technology by 2014.ADNFCR-8000229-ID-800394616-ADNFCR
