Use of effective teleworking schemes and virtualisation are two of the key ways in which companies can cut down the amount of money they spend on IT and electricity. This is according to Darren Clare, head of IP (internet protocol) services at Zycko. He explained that allowing staff members to work from home will significantly reduce a firm's energy outlay. "Implementing new policies to allow staff to work from home obviously reduces any energy consumption they are likely to have within head offices or branch offices," Mr Clare said. He was also keen to point out that services such as VoIP (voice over internet protocol) can make the communication process easier, while virtualisation will help to take normally office-based systems to more efficient remote data centres. In a report published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), an agency of the United Nations, recently, it was stated that a Swedish company reduced its energy usage by 20 to 40 per cent per employee by using a combination of teleworking and virtualised services.
