A futurist at artificial-intelligence.org.uk has argued that telephony is increasingly enabling a seamless link between people and technology. According to Massimo Barbato, technologies in this field, including voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), are enabling a great link between technology and humans. This, he added, is only likely to grow further in the future as further streams of information are linked into telecommunications devices and computing technology continues to grow too. Mr Barbato described the internet as a huge "electronic brain" and said that it will continue to grow more sophisticated as time moves on. The link found between the internet, computing and telephones was one that Mr Barbato said had particular potential, saying that it allowed people to communicate on multiple levels around the world. "The phone in a sense is becoming more embedded into everyday life," he said. "It is enabling what I would say is a seamless relationship between technology and everyday life and if you look at companies like Sony, it is very aware of the trends." Mr Barbato also spoke about what he felt was one of the most up-and-coming technologies in the field of telephone and communications, which is the ability to make payments via a phone. "In Japan, it [Sony] has developed something called FeliCa (Felicity Card) technology, which are basically phone handsets that are used as barcode readers," he explained. "So if you're in possession of one of these phones, you can download information or make purchases using a top up system of e-credits." He added that this technology had been developed by the company over the course of the last decade or so and is set to become commonplace over the next few years. If his predictions are correct and we are at the dawn of this society where a phone is becoming such an essential tool, then it could be advisable for businesses to get in while the going is good. Rather than being left behind, investing in telecommunications devices and apparatus could ensure companies are ahead of the game. Breaking news from ihotdesk, IT Projects in London ![]() |
