Skype updates iOS app
Skype has updated its iOS app and it now supports video messaging.

Earlier this month the Microsoft-owned VoIP provider released a new system that allowed users to send short clips to each other and this has now been extended to the popular Apple-based version of the programme.

Consumers will now be able to send and receive an "unlimited" number of video messages, although there is a maximum length of three minutes per recording. - although a fair use clause has been put in place to stop people from exploiting the update.

Skype has said its customers are allowed to keep the clips for up to six months, although those wanting a more thorough archive can subscribe to Skype Premium for a set monthly fee of just £3.44.

The VoIP app has proven incredibly popular on the Apple store and currently ranks among the top ten most downloaded programmes of all time on the service.

Derek Snyder, head of mobile marketing at the firm, said: "We've seen an incredible response to the new capabilities we've brought to Skype recently including video messaging, picture sharing and HD video.

"We want everyone to have the same great Skype experience regardless of the device they choose. We have some work to do in this area, but you'll increasingly see a more consistent feature set across all our apps by the end of the year."

The VoIP platform was also recently buoyed by the naming of Elisa Steele as corporate vice president of marketing.

Ms Steele has extensive industry experience and has had lengthy stints at Yahoo!, Sun Microsystems and NetApp. The executive also has a Masters degree in Business Administration from San Francisco State University and a BA in the same subject from the Unviersity of New Hampshire.

Her appointment may be a sign that Microsoft, which bought Skype earlier this year, may be attempting to bring more corporate experience to the team - which is made up primarily of technology experts from its time as a start-up.
