  • He believes they are being used to finance illegal activities
  • The official proposes to introduce a mandatory register of holders of digital assets

Head of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation Alexander Bastrykin believes that the country should introduce a register of holders of digital assets. In his opinion, this will help mitigate the risk of an increase in the crime rate due to the proliferation of cryptocurrencies.

This statement was made by the head of the Investigative Committee within the framework of an interview with the newspaper “Rossiyskaya Gazeta”. Bastrykin is sure that further regulation of this area is simply necessary, especially given the growth of cryptocurrency markets.

He also referred to the digital assets law from 2021. According to the official, it is they who are responsible for the risk of an increase in criminal activities financed by cryptocurrencies.

Bastrykin also believes that mandatory identification should be carried out not only for CA holders, but also for crypto-exchanges. How such a register will be drawn up and how it threatens retail investors is still unclear. This statement was made against the background of the deterioration of the legal status of cryptocurrencies in the Russian Federation. The country’s central bank is considering the possibility of a complete ban on investments in this segment. Experts say Russia is following the path of China, refusing to recognize the prospects and potential of digital assets.
